It’s no surprise that a music capital like Austin would inspire a magazine like Rockrgrl. During its ten-year run, the award-winning magazine interviewed hundreds of successful female musicians like Regina Spektor, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, Joan Jett and half the other female musicians in your MP3 collection.
Like most print magazines, it didn’t survive the changes in modern publishing. However, the organizers behind Rockrgrl still want to shine a light on the accomplishments of female musicians. Hence, the Rockrgrl Talk Book, a tome chock-full of quotations from the top rockers and songstresses anywhere.
Rockrgrl is also putting together the First Annual Music and Film Conference as part of MEOW (Musicians for Equal Opportunities for Women). A portion of the profits from the Rockrgrl quote book go towards the conference start up costs.
The book’s chapters are divided into sound advice, surviving the biz, inspiration, musicianship and GRL talk. Female musicians can read advice from a truly impressive collection of successful, renowned artists.
Pledge levels start at $30 for a copy of the Kindle edition then jump up to $75 for a copy of the hardback book itself. For $150 you get both the print and electronic editions. From there, the pledge levels ambitiously rise until, for $1000, you get a fully transferable VIP pass for all MEOW events from now through 2015 plus dinner for two, a tour of Austin’s music scene, a quote of your own featured in the book, and of course both the print and electronic editions.
This is clearly meant more as a fundraiser for future events than a chance to get wide distribution of the book. That’s OK. A city like Austin should throw more weight behind supporting a diverse collection of musicians. Contributing to this Kickstarter is a good way to do that while also getting an inspirational coffee table book.
With a month to go as of the publication of this article, the campaign is closing in on its goal -- Go Grl!
