Austin is home to Blizzard, Bioware, and a ton of other gaming studios, so it’s no surprise local gamers came up with the Darkmatter X-Box Laptop Kit. Invest in the DIY kit and within a few hours you can transform your X-Box console into a portable laptop-style box, perfect for LAN parties. If you’re not the sort of gamer who also has soldering irons around the house, you can also buy a pre-built kit.

It’s an App-tastic week in Austin! You can learn about the Mobile App and Gaming Arms race at Capital Factory, work on Chrome Apps with Google, or attend iOS app developer groups in either the north or south of the city. Speaking of north Austin, your neck of the woods is getting a little extra love this week. Check out the Pflugerville Tech Social and the Round Rock Mini Maker Faire at TechShop.

All things considered, I was glad we had arrived so early. Cool breezes, a cold water bottle, a good book and an endless supply of phone-supplied crossword puzzles had enabled two hours to pass pleasantly enough. I turned off the phone, put down my book and glanced at the nearby UT Tower.

    Using cupping to judge coffees

If your idea of a South American coffee grower is a mustachioed peasant in a wool pancho, you’re due for a quick history lesson from Casa Brasil’s Joel Shuler.

We’ve trolled Facebook, LinkedIn, and odd corners of the internet looking for the tech jobs you won’t find on Craigslist. Most of these come from people at the company in question hoping a friend of a friend can help them find a good person to hire. Luckily for you, The Austin Post is your friend.

Winston Churchill once observed how "We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us." By that measure the current state of Downtown Austin architecture – especially many of the the structures that have risen over the last quarter century to create a new skyline – hints at a rather jumbled futu

This week you can dance walk your way down Zilker before attending a stealthy backyard circus. If that’s not enough to make you feel like someone is making a musical about your life, watch some naughty puppets sing about everyday problems then wrap it all up with a Whedonesque concert.

One of the things I love about the Austin area is the abundance of hiking trails and parks. Year-round, Austinites of all ages and backgrounds take to the trails to enjoy the beauty and solitude of nature.

This May same-sex couples had the right to attend the Jarrell High School Prom. For this they can thank Allison Brawley, who courageously fought for that right last spring.

  • 06/11/13--06:26: Keep Austin Freelancing
  • I find myself constantly surprised by how many adults I see hiking trails, swimming or just lounging poolside during work hours here in Austin. Then I remember that these folks are just like me – they’re pursuing portfolio careers in a city that encourages individuality and freedom.

The company Alex Rhodes works for is headquartered in Philadelphia and his regional office is in Arizona; he’s one of only two employees based here in Austin. But rather than working in his pajamas from the couch, Rhodes gets up at 7:30 a.m.

Whether you prefer your retrofuturism vintage Space Age style or more Neo-Victorian Steampunked up, you have great excuses to dress up this week. The Institution Theater invites you to get a corsage and some antenna for their Space Prom. Later in the week, strap on your corsets and goggles for Beer, Brass, and BS. If you’re not into cosplay, you can still grab a beer with your fellow nerds at the monthly Fantasy and Sci-Fi Social, make embarrassing confessions at Show and Tell, or laugh at other people’s misery at the Nerdcore Comedy show.
