This week, Austin is home to an interesting mix of networking and hacking. On the more social side, you can have drinks with AIGA creatives or LinkedIn users before stopping by a brand new coworking location for their launch party. On the more technical side of things. Austin is home to the second annual DevOpsDays as well as a Defcon 512 meeting and ATX 2600 meeting. In between are plenty of user groups and informative sessions.

I went into Austin Psych Fest expecting to see a bunch of stoned people standing in a field listening to, well, psych music. I did get my fill of that, but there was also much more of a “scene” than I was expecting. The cool kids were out in full effect, both on and off the stages.

In the 2012 election, Proposition 15, which would have set aside almost $80 million in bond money toward affordable housing programs, was voted down by about 2 percent. Proponents, like McFadden, say the money would have helped build more housing units and allowed non-profits to raise hundreds of millions of dollars more in grant and federal funding, so this year, they’re not taking any chances and are educating voters on the subject early.

One of the most interesting things about visiting places around Texas is simply thinking about the area’s past. Most of Texas was once covered by a shallow ocean, then populated by dinosaurs. At some point, volcanic activity took over, as plates shifted. Somewhere down the line, man came.

I attended the Texas Tribune morning conversation on Earth Day, when (naturally) the subject was supposed to be the environment. But on the heels of the tragedy in West, it turned into something else.

It’s no secret that bicycling is good for a person and good for the community. Bicycling prevents obesity, pollution and the costs that go along with one-person-one-car commuting. To encourage more Austinites to become cyclists, the city is celebrating Bike Month in May.

One of the ways the City and developers are enacting this part of Imagine Austin is by encouraging construction of mixed-use buildings – retail on the first floor and maybe office space on the second or third and apartments and condos the rest of the way up. Although developments like these have been sprouting up around the city for a few years now, it’s still a learning process for those involved.
