With more than 2,000 bands playing, I only caught a fraction of them, but the ones I did catch left a mark. Whether new bands or just new to you, SXSW should be not only about seeing old favorites but also about discovering new ones.

The volunteer at the sign-in desk looked young enough to be my kid, 25 years old, tops. He smiled brightly as he looked at my name on the badge and handed it over.

“So,” he asked, “is this your first time at South by Southwest?”

Being guys, I think the tendency is not to do any research whatsoever and assume that we will learn as we go, but his lack of any Austin knowledge was beyond pathetic and akin to the outsiders map without the benefit of ever learning about the Alamo, let alone remembering it (I put my hand over my heart when he asked me what it was).

It was a good and useful idea at the time: "Keep Austin Weird." Now, some dozen years later, does it still make any sense as a civic slogan?

Some weeks, even a place as laid back as Austin focuses on work. There aren’t any big parties or giant networking events. Instead, this is a great week for developers to learn something useful at user groups. Meet fellow coders facing the same quandaries with Ruby on Rails, Python, JavaScript and more.
